Stuffing Box

Description: A single stuffing box is an independent sealing cavity unit within the stuffing box assembly; a complete stuffing seal is made up of several stuffing boxes assembled in series, installed between the cylinder and the crankcase with the piston rod passing through, and is the most critical safety sealing component of a hydrogen compressor.

I. Core Functions

1. Multi-stage throttling and pressure reduction sealing: Several stuffing boxes reduce the high hydrogen pressure stage by stage, preventing high-pressure hydrogen from leaking outwards along the piston rod and preventing the escape of flammable, explosive hydrogen.

2. Zonal isolation and protection: The packing assembly is divided into a pressure-reduction and throttling zone, a main sealing zone, and a nitrogen isolation sealing zone. Sealing nitrogen is fed into the isolation chamber to dilute the small amounts of leaked hydrogen, which is then led away to flare recovery, ensuring explosion-proof safety for the equipment and the plant.

3. Friction cooling and load-bearing lubrication: The stuffing box body is provided with lubricating oil and cooling water passages to carry away the heat generated by the high-speed reciprocating friction between the sealing rings and the piston rod, reducing high-temperature wear of the seals.

4. Medium isolation: Separates the high-pressure hydrogen side of the cylinder from the crankcase lubrication side, preventing hydrogen from entering the lubrication system while blocking lubricating oil from entering the high-purity hydrogen process path.

5. Segmented fault-tolerant sealing: With the multi-stage independent stuffing box design, slight wear of a single seal does not immediately cause major leakage from the whole machine, extending the maintenance interval.

II. Structural Form

Each stuffing box is an annular split metal cavity housing one set of three-segment sealing rings.

III. Commonly Used Materials

Metal housing: Cast tin bronze, lead bronze, carbon steel, stainless steel.
